A 10-minute conversation during freshman week at Truman State University in the fall of 1990 sparked a lifelong friendship and creative partnership between Greg Linhares and Glenn Schmitz. Known then as Whiskey Richard, the two added Chris Clausen in 1994 and performed in Kirksville and St. Louis. After a brief 17-year interlude of adulting, the three reformed under the moniker Random Fog (Friends of Greg/Glenn) and released an album entitled “Confluence” in 2018. Since that time, Random Fog has grown and changed into an ever-evolving vibrant musical collective, having recently welcomed several new members who bring their own unique talents and styles to the group.
Greg Linhares continues to anchor the band with his bass playing, vocals, backing guitars, and percussion. His nephew, Thomas Linhares, adds the electrifying sounds of lead and electric guitar, while Andrew Linhares, another talented family member, contributes with mandolin, electric guitar, bass, and vocals. The rhythm section is further solidified by Scott Deffenderfer on drums and percussion. Vocalist Abby FaQuin brings a powerful and emotive voice to the mix, and longtime friend and former Whiskey Richard co-conspirator Toby Lingafelter enriches the band’s sound with his acoustic and electric guitar skills, along with his raw, southern vocals. Glenn Schmitz also continues to contribute guitar playing and songwriting from afar in Pittsburgh, gathers his own crew together for occasional shows there as “Random Fog East”, and joins the band in St. Louis for an occasional gig when he can.
In 2024, Random Fog plans to release new material, continuing their tradition of musical innovation. Their latest album, 30 Year Overnight Sensation, showcases the collective’s remarkable diversity, blending Americana, blues, rock, classic rock, country, bluegrass, and even flamenco. This eclectic mix reflects the personal styles of each member, pushing the boundaries of genre and creating a rich, multifaceted sound. With frequent performances in St. Louis and a commitment to constant evolution, Random Fog continues to captivate audiences with their dynamic and genre-defying music.
